As of October 1, 2008 EMS-I will operate under the name of Aquaveo!

GROUNDWATER FLOW AND
TRANSPORT MODELING WITH GMS

  • October 7-10, 2008 | Provo, Utah

A Hands-On Short Course Featuring Geostatistics, Site Characterization, MODFLOW/MODPATH/MT3DMS/RT3D Simulations, Analytic Element Modeling and Model Calibration

EMS-I will award 2.8 CEUs to each participant who successfully completes this course.

Course Description

The groundwater modeling training course by EMS-I is designed as a hands-on, application oriented training course. The course will provide the attendees with the knowledge and tools necessary to solve groundwater modeling problems quickly and efficiently. The course will begin with a discussion on how to use the geostatistical tools in GMS to characterize existing contaminant plumes in both two- and three-dimensions. A series of tutorials and lessons on the GMS interface to MODFLOW/MODPATH/ MT3DMS/RT3D will then be given including an explanation of how to use the Map Module to create numerical models directly from a high-level conceptual model constructed with GIS tools. Analytic element modeling with MODAEM will also be covered

Course Objectives

  • Objectives of the four day training course on GMS are:
  • Benefit from hands on instruction throughout the course.
  • Learn to characterize contaminant plumes in both 2D and 3D.
  • Perform flow modeling with MODFLOW
  • Learn to model transport/reactive transport with MT3DMS/ART3D
  • Analyze particle tracking with MODPATH
  • Use MODAEM to solve simple flow and particle tracking problems
  • Create conceptual models using GIS objects
  • Learn to calibrate groundwater models
  • Learn how to generate professional output of modeling projects.
  • Parameter Estimation with PEST/UCODE/PES

Instructors
Dr. Norm L. Jones is a professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Brigham Young University. His research area is the application of computer graphics and computational geometry to ground water modeling. Dr. Jones manages the development of the GMS graphical user interface and is the director of the Environmental Modeling Research Laboratory at BYU. He has taught numerous university courses and ground water modeling short courses. He has also authored more than 90 books, reports, and technical articles and is the primary author of the GMS reference manual and tutorials.

R. Jeffrey Davis, P.E. Director of Training and Consulting at Aquaveo. Jeff worked as a lead developer of the GMS software for 8 years at Brigham Young University's Environmental Modeling Research Laboratory prior to overseeing the technical operations of EMS-I for the past 8 years. Now at Aquaveo he directs all of the training and consulting efforts. He has considerable experience in the practical application of GMS to modeling problems and has taught numerous groundwater modeling courses worldwide.

Michael J. Kennard - GMS development team leader and software engineer at Aquaveo. Kennard has years of experience developing groundwater modeling software, teaching, and consulting.

Alan Lemon - Member of the GMS development team and software engineer at Aquaveo. Alan has years of experience developing groundwater modeling software and teaching. He has also been involved in several consulting projects using GMS to model groundwater systems
